Re: Catching up

Oh, interesting. Several of my uncles served in the Pacific theater. Both my mother's brothers, one of my father's, and possibly my aunt's husband, who was in the Marines. But I don't know the details about any of them. Another uncle by marriage served in the Coastal Artillery off shore in North Afr...

Re: Catching up

WW2: my father fought in WW2, as did every man of that generation in my family. All my uncles, 4 blood kin, and 3 by marriage. Also my FIL. My father saw especially hard service in Europe. He was in both the Battle of the Bulge and the Bridge at Remagen. He was a Combat Engineer, which means he was ...

Re: Gardening

There are apple orchards all over the place up there, Mau. Mary Baldwin even has an Apple Day spontaneous holiday every October. Surely you could find one tree!

Re: Promoting my book: Sky Kingdom

Thanks, Mau. Several of her plays are based on Shakespearean plays, like modern takes. She got started this way because she'd heard about a grant for this sort of thing a few years back. Not sure if that grant still exists. And some of them are based on Biblical stories. But the novel she wrote was ...

Re: Happy Pi Day!

Well, May Day is also St Walpurgis' feast day in Germany and other German speaking areas (Catholic ones). She was famous for fighting witchcraft, and somehow the common folk associated the eve of her saint's day with witches, and they would light bonfires to ward off the evil spirits. Sort of like H...

Re: Catching up

Well, it was my great-grandfather, my father's grandfather, who lived in his son's (my grandfather's) house in his old age. And my mother's grandfather was also a Confederate veteran, though he was murdered? Committed suicide? Died accidentally of a gunshot wound? when her father was two. I'm pretty...

Re: Gardening

Lol. Well, if I did, I suppose some of my pumpkins might survive their blossoming.

Deer just don't come onto our street, though they do venture into some parts of town.

Re: Happy Pi Day!

I'm pretty sure that I would celebrate Walpurgisnacht in preference to Halloween if I lived in Australia. It's a fall holiday down there, and the Halloween spirit is autumnal.

Re: Gardening

Deer don't enter our yard, but other critters do. Some of them (Squirrels? Rabbits? Possums? Raccoons?) always eat any squash or pumpkin blossoms in the night.

Re: Happy Pi Day!

Oh, I have Walpurgisnacht on my radar! Not that I do anything about it, but I do make a mental note.

Re: Catching up

Well, as I've said, my maternal grandfather was born in 1875, and that's pretty mind-blowing for me, too, even though I know I'm older than you. But in the South, we still think about Reconstruction (at least, those of us with deep roots do), and that means my grandfather was born before it ended. T...

Re: Gardening

Good luck with your gardening, Mau! I have a few tomato seedlings I need to plant this week. I have some beefsteak and some cherry tomatoes.

Wow, she started a lemon tree from seed? Like, from a grocery store lemon? I wonder if they stay true to type. What a neat gift, though!

Re: Happy Pi Day!

My experience with summer projects is that you really have to take the bull by the horns, plan them out, use the days. Because summer gets by so fast!
