Re: How the Irish Celebrate St Patrick's Day

Lol! Fireworks aren't illegal around here for a certain number of days (maybe 11?) before and after the 4th. Same thing at New Year's. Still, I prefer the civic shows, because fireworks can be dangerous. Also, I rather enjoy the communal atmosphere of the big fireworks shows. Btw, I did look up &quo...

Re: Make Money from your Halloween Site

That just sounds so scary to me, like the end of the world.

Re: What was your first Halloween costume?

Vampires are classic, and I love vampire stories, but I don't think I've ever dressed as one. You know, I mentioned up thread that the first costume I remember wearing was a witch. I recall parading around in it at school. But I don't recall Halloweens earlier than that, which is odd, because I can ...

Re: How the Irish Celebrate St Patrick's Day

My husband dislikes crowds, too, although he prefers to spend his time off at home. He doesn't even leave the house for 4th of July fireworks because the pleasure of seeing them doesn't offset the headache of leaving in the inevitable traffic jam.

Re: Make Money from your Halloween Site

Omg, that must have been terrifying. Yet your building didn't collapse? So I guess all those structural.provisions they've made out there have worked.

Re: Make Money from your Halloween Site

Where were you when it happened? At home? At work? Did you have time to process mentally what was going on before it was over? My California cousins tell me they'll take earthquakes over tornadoes any day. I don't know. Tornadoes are terrifying, and I hate them. But I can't imagine anything much mor...

Re: How the Irish Celebrate St Patrick's Day

Lol. Well, I think the guy who writes this blog would say that's fine. In fact, he says he himself is one who runs away from the crowds and prefers to take nature hikes on his day off. I gather he's not much of a drinker, either, and insists that going out and getting rip-roaring drunk is not really...

How the Irish Celebrate St Patrick's Day

I recently reread all these St Patrick's threads and found myself wondering what it would be like to be in Ireland at this time of year. I found a good article, on a blog called The Irish Road Trip, written by a man who's lived there for 35 years, and I found it interesting, so I'll try to link it h...

I remember that quake! My older son was an infant. We saw it on TV. A terrible quake. We lived in Virginia back then, the Shenandoah Valley.

Re: Make Money from your Halloween Site

Oh, wow! I never heard of that before. I notice the woman posted her article on Halloween. We have a serious fault around here, too, the New Madrid (pronounced MAD-rid in these parts). It's over around Memphis, and I think about it every time I cross the Mississippi River into Arkansas there. It las...

Re: Make Money from your Halloween Site

I don't suppose you all are threatened with tornadoes this time of year? For us, the back & forth between warm and cold spells often results in bad storms. You learn to hate unseasonable warmth, because the leading edge of the inevitable cold fronts almost always brings tornadoes. Also, when tha...

Ha! You're right. I'd forgotten how much it keeps coming around to Christmas.

Have you seen The Holdovers yet? That's another Christmas-not-Christmas movie.

Re: Make Money from your Halloween Site

Today, however, I didn't watch that. Instead I pulled out Catch Me If You Can, which I always find a lot of fun. Young Leo DiCaprio and Tom Hanks as the youthful con artist Frank Abagnale and his pursuer.
