Yeah it's possible. We unplugged it and I don't think it's come on ever since. So it could just be faulty wiring. Houses are already creepy enough at night.
We heard some bumps in the ceiling one night though, but it might be some kind of animal that got in there somehow. I know we've had mice, but I doubt mice are going to make that much noise, but you never know.

I had raccoons and a nest of crows in my attic once. My town is plagued with crows, rabbits and squirls, so we have a lot of animal control problems.

The Shenandoah Valley is spook central, though. When I lived up there, the ghosts stories were everywhere.

There are plenty of ghost stories in my neck of the woods, too. One of the supposedly most haunted places in Illinois is the Bachelors Grove cemetery, which I posted some pictures a couple of years ago.
