St. Patrick's Day is about....
Two more months!!!
So, anyone plan to do something on St. Patty's Day? Maybe me and my friends will be going to St. Paddy's pub.

Re: St. Patrick's Day is about....
Ah, a St. Patrick's Day wedding anniversary! That would be pleasant, I think.
Mine is Oct. 24, near Halloween, but not on it (one week prior, to be exact).
For the last few years I have experimented with cooking traditional Irish foods on St. Patrick's Day. Two or three times I have done corned beef & cabbage in the crock pot, but no one in my family seems to like it much except me. Then I learned (via the History Channel) that corned beef is actually an American Irish thing, not Irish Irish at all. Apparently the Irish immigrants who settled in the big Northeastern cities lived near the Jewish immigrants, and the Jewish people were the ones who ate corned beef. The American Irish liked it and took it over as their own.
So now I am thinking of cooking an Irish stew this year. Maybe my family will like it better. I believe that in Ireland, they use lamb in their stew, but lamb is not so easy to come by in TN, so I may have to substitute beef.
One thing I did do last year was make Irish soda bread. Now, that was a hit with my family.

We're going to have corned beef and cabbages for family dinner. Also, corn breads.

Do you put sugar in your corn bread? Most Southerners don't, but some people won't eat it without the sugar. When I was growing up, we called sweet corn bread "Yankee corn bread."
I don't think of corn bread as being traditionally Irish, since corn is an American thing. But it does go well with cabbage.

Re: St. Patrick's Day is about....
Speaking of Corned Beef & Cabbage, I have a party at my house on honor of St. Patrick's Day, but it usualy has to be on the weekend either before of after the actual day, because of work schedules and the like. On March 17th, I will be up to my ears in photo shoots, but on Saturday March 13th, I will be preparing Corned Beef, Cabage, and Baked Potatos for the family. I slow roast my corned beef for 12 hours in a 250 degree oven. I slowly simmer the cabage in the crock pot for 8 hours with a piece of the corned beef for added flavoe. The potatoes, though a departure from the usual St. Patrick's Day tradition, are done out on the grill for two hours.
Nothing but rave reviews have I gotten for this feast, and it's one of my favorite parties. It's no Halloween, but it's a great day for food, folks and fun, and it's a great oportunity to take pride in my Irish heritage.

Sounds delicious, Mike. I don't know if there's any way on earth to cook corned beef & cabbage that would make my family like it. However, I would be happy to attend your party!

I would love to have you, Murf. It would be fun, and I love good corned beef. I bake it, though. I don't boil it. Boiling tends to water down the flaver IMHO.

Re: St. Patrick's Day is about....
I confess that I do put sugar in my cornbread, although it's only because I don't have a recipe that doesn't include it.
I'm a huge fan of Irish Soda Bread; it's something I've always wanted to try, and this year I'm swear I'm gonna bake some. Although I'm not crazy about raisins in baked goods.... I wish I could get my hands on some dried currants instead.
Mike... Now you've got me craving a corned beef and swiss on rye with spicy mustard....
