My husband and I have been watching the BBC comedy Ghosts on dvd and enjoying it. It's reminded me of an old American sitcom called Topper, which aired for a couple of years in the mid-50s. It started before I was born, so I must have seen it in reruns, but I was very young. My mother told me it had been based on a hit movie.
The plot was about a young couple who'd been killed in an accident , and they haunted another couple. Only the husband, whose name was Topper, could see them.
Now that I think of it, I guess this is sort of the plot of Beetlejuice, too. But Topper came first, and the ghosts were more normal folks.
I looked it up on WIki. Apparently there had been a series of Topper novels on which the 1937 movie was based. The movie featured Cary Grant as the ghostly husband, and apparently it enhanced his career and led him into the screwball comedies he was known for. I guess any big Cary Grant fan would know it.

Re: Does Anyone Else Remember Topper?
I've heard of the show, but I haven't ever watched it. But you're right it does sound like the story from Beetlejuice.
