That is just a ridiculous statement. Approval? From who? Most liberals don't like his decision. Taking time in making the decision only gave Republican hacks a talking point to use in their mud-slinging. Implying that a deliberative process was somehow a crass political calculation is petty partisanship at its worst.

There is no truly good option, only a series of bad ones. He had to weigh the consequences, and I'll tell you, I'm glad we have a president who makes the big decisions by a process more complex than a coin toss.

Spookymufu wrote:I didnt like him giving dates of military extraction, we all know the bad guys are listening so we'll have to see how that goes, hopefully he has a plan to prevent the Taliban from just waiting us out.

I remember the same argument being made against setting a timetable for withdraw from Iraq. The fact is, it doesn't matter what we tell the "bad guys" about when we're leaving. The point is what we're telling the "good guys" who we're supposed to be training to defend themselves.

It's like this. "Look, we're gonna help you. We're gonna help you set up your government, and help train your army to defend yourselves against the insurgents. But we won't be here forever. On such and such a date, we're out of here, so no more d!cking around. Get yourselves sorted, or get killed and overthrown." If the Afghani government thinks they'll have the U.S. Army to defend them as long as they want, why would they ever bother organizing and equipping their own army?

Spookymufu wrote:His far left base are probably going ape sh*t tho because he didnt flat out say he was pulling all troops home

You don't get much further left than me, but I'll be quite honest with you.... I don't know how I feel about it. I was part of the 80% who supported W. when he went in back in November of 2001. That's a big part of the reason I opposed the war in Iraq; it was a diversion from the war where the guys who attacked us on 9/11 actually were. I got so sick of pointing out to Republicans I debated that there was no Al Qaeda in Iraq before we invaded. I got sick of pointing out that not a single one of the hijackers was Iraqi. I got sick of pointing out that, even as they were dragging Saddam Hussein from his spider hole, the guy who actually murdered 3,000 Americans was still roaming free in the hills of Afghanistan, the land of the forgotten war. And I fully agreed with Obama during the 2008 campaign when he said, over and over, that if elected he intended to send more troops into Afghanistan to finish the job. My problem is that I'm less and less clear what the job actually is, and if it even can be finished. I don't know if it is too late to turn around the failures in that country due to our under-resourcing it for six years. I don't know if establishing a stable government with a military capable of preventing the overthrow of the government is possible in Afghanistan, and if it is, what kind of totalitarian government might it morph into a decade from now, that might present a whole new threat? I don't know if expending more blood and treasure will actually yield a better result, or if it's doubling down on a bet that's already lost.

I do know this much.... Any lefty who voted for Obama who's going apesh!t over the decision hasn't been paying attention for the past two years. Whatever else you say, however else you feel about him or the decision, this is a campaign promise kept.

hummm, i thought we were almost on the same page this time......

I wouldnt say you're far left, I put Michael Moore and Janeane Garofalo in that catagory, Michael Moore said withdraw or else.

Obama cant take a dump with out consulting someone, he drug his feet on this troop increase probably wondering what his base was going to think and looking at polls and trying to decide if it was worth upsetting moveon.org. But, I'm glad he is doing it even if it took him 4mo to decide, with him against the troop push in Iraq (that worked BTW) I figured he'd decline to do it.

I hate to tell you this, but Obama couldn't give two d@mns what his base thinks. In fact, his largest drop in approval comes not from independents or conservatives, but amongst liberals. If he cared about what people thought of him, he would have made the decision back in September. The more time he took, the lower his approval dropped, and he knew it. But that's not how he rolls. If you watched the campaign closely, you wouldn't be surprised to see that he governs the same way he campaigns. He doesn't get caught up in the day to day 24 hour cable news cycle, the who's up and who's down game. He plays long-ball. He couldn't give a cr@p what people are saying today; he's concerned about the impact of his decisions six months, six years from now. The health care reform package, when it passes, won't even take effect until 2013. Now why would he expend all that political capital to pass major legislation that won't even yield benefits until the year AFTER he has to run for re-election? If he had his choice between every American having health care coverage in the year 2014, or him still being president in 2014, he'd choose the former.

And keep in mind, you can't make a one to one comparison between a troop surge in Iraq and one in Afghanistan. The surge in Iraq "worked" because, in addition to an increase in American boots on the ground, there was a change in strategy in how we dealt with the insurgents. The so-called "Sunni Awakening" was essentially us paying a large segment of the insurgency to switch sides and stop fighting us. There is no parallel group in Afghanistan for us to flip. So just saying "More troops WORKED in Iraq, so more troops will WORK in Afghanistan" is an oversimplification that doesn't necessarily hold true.

There is a lot to apologize for, after 8 years of Dubya. And he's not trying to get the world to love him; he wants the world to love America again. I don't know if you've been overseas, either before or after Bush was elected, but things changed. A LOT.

So why should we care if the world likes us? Well, perfect example; Obama is getting commitments of more troops and more money from those NATO allies he's been schmoozing. That's a GOOD thing for America.

Oh, I see... So "4 here, 5 there, 6 over there" when Bush was president was a "Coalition of the Willing", but when Obama gets NATO to send in an additional 5,000 troops, that's nothing.

You know, this one time I think you're right. I think that as soon as Obama went to an Asian country, and practiced the Asian custom of bowing to an Asian dignitary, Al Qaeda saw that and said "That does it! The American President is weak! Now we are going to try to attack America!!" Because you're exactly right. Before he did that, Al Qaeda had absolutely no desire whatsoever to try to attack our country. In fact, I bet the only reason they attacked us on 9/11 in the first place was because they knew that eight years later we would elect a weak president who bows to foreign dignitaries. Hopefully the next time that sissy, weak, wussy President Obama meets a foreign leader, he'll spit on his shoe, or punch him in the nose, so Al Qaeda will know just how tough we are and won't even THINK about trying to attack us.....

I'm pretty sure the terrorists knew he was weak before he was actually elected....

Last night 'twas witching Hallowe'en
Dearest; an apple russet- brown
I pared, and thrice above my crown
Whirled the long skin; they watched in keen;
I flung it far; they laughed and cried me shame
Dearest, there lay the letter of your name!
