Photo size...WELL DUH!

Post by Andybev01 » Wed Apr 28, 2010 7:53 pm

So...I'm constantly struggling to make pix small enough to post here (256 max) and get so frustrated that the get so tiny it's hard to see any detail.

Someone at work suggested reducing the image print quality and for goodness sake, that was the fix.

I save my files at 100% because I print a lot of them, and it never occurred to me that that was the answer...

I'm not the brightest JOL on the porch.

I always make mine in the 600pix range for the widest or tallest side

On average, I scale down 12% from what my camera saves... and then "save for web", which further reduces the file size of the image.

Great photo! Now that you're scaling 'em down enough to post, I can't wait to see more. ^_^

That's what I was doing but the original files are so large that reducing the pixels made them so small it drove me nuts.

So yes, taking them down a notch was the answer.

Now that I have the hang of this.

These are a set from Lemax Spooky Town that I picked up last year for almost nothing (bad economy = great bargains).

I totally dig macro photography. I printed a stormy sky photo on legal paper and the fake 'grass' is a miniature modeling supply.

I know my way around film & digital cameras but like I said it just didn't occur to me to reduce the friggin' file size.

Thanks man. Here's one from a lower angle that I use on my desktop now & then. I switch them out a lot.

Please, help yourself if you (or any of you) would like to copy them for your personal use.

The funny thing is I had taken about a dozen shots before this one and had walked to the shade to check my camera settings then turned around to move him to another spot and saw the sun lighting him up. Then I got some good shots!

That is a real nice picture, Andy. I feel like I could almost print it out and frame it; it really gets the Halloween spirit flowing in me!

I always save my digital camera pics full size on my external hard drive, but any ones I want to email or post online I toss into Adobe Photoshop and just do an image resize. I usually drop it down to 15-20% of the original size so it will fit comfortably in a browser window. If it's detail intensive, I'll leave it a bit bigger, but I usually prefer to see the overall composition of a whole image rather than a close up of part of the pic.

Mine is 500 gigs, and at the pace I'm going it'll probably take me two or three years to fill it up.

I am starting to be a bit more discriminating about what I keep or delete before I dump the card onto the machine.

I used to save everything, but it just doesn't make sense to keep 100 shots of 1 scene that I know I will never get to editing.

Unless they're completely blurry, I still save everything. You never know when you might need to go back in and pull out an image from the shadows that you hadn't noticed before....
