you're right, it is a big bummer for everyone that's for sure. but i definitely have to give the mask the advantage over makeup on a rainy halloween.

I actually had a couple bad experiances with make up.
Two Halloweens in a row this happened, after the Trick or Treating was over and we went home (since where I lived we literally had to drive to a town to Trick or treat since we lived out in the boon docks) I was cleaning the make up off and a wasp crawled out of the towel and stung me up my neck! Two Halloweens in a row! Needless to say, I really hate wasps and bees.
I'm not claustrophobic by any means, but masks are kind of uncomfortable.
The last couple years I didn't wear masks or make up. For my pirate costume I had a bandana, earrings and such and the outfit. No make up necessary. When I did my biker kitty costume, I just threw on a pair of cat ears and a leather jacket, but I was trying to get a costume in a pinch. This year I'm planning to put more effort into it. I've got the outfit, I just need a witch hat.
I do wear SOME make up though, but usually it's just something simple like black lipstick. I like getting black lipstick even when it's not halloween, but halloween time's the only time I can find it without trying to look at hot topic for it. Even then, I havn't had much luck.

It sounds like you do some pretty creative costumes.
Speaking of wasps, I have a really scary story that happened to my older siblings while vacationing in Minisota. We use to own an 80 achre parcel of land up there. Every Summer, my mom and dad would pack up the kids and head up there for a vacation. The year I was born, the kids were out walking in the woods when my brother, Jack stepped on a log. Inside that Hollow log was a huge wasp's nests. They were all attacked, and stung right and left. My older sister, Maureen panicked and ran right into my dad's photographic trypod and had a huge gash over her eye. The boys were stund right and left. Our brave family dog actualy sat on the nest until the kids were out of sight.
My dad describe him as looking like he h ad one of those all-day lolly pops in his mouth.

I prefer glue-on appliances, something that leaves my mouth free, but I'll use masks if I don't have time to get ready. I just hate having to remove the mask and go out of character to eat and drink at a party.
One year I did myself up as one of the vampires from Buffy, the looks I got while driving to the party were excellent. I stopped at a 7/11 on the way and people were actually cowering from me in the store. The contact lenses go a long way towards creating the illusion.

Most of the time I prefer make up, because I can be more creative..but also depend of the costume..
By the way, if someone here want to sell, buy or exchange mask ..check this out!

I went with makeup because I don't like to get all sweaty and feel uncomfortable. Also, having a mask on, you get drool and junk on it and then I wouldn't wear it again even if it was cleaned.

I haven't dressed up as something that needed good face paint for awhile, but I would choose makeup over a mask anyday. Masks have their benifits but the thing I really hate about them is the visiblity problem. Thanksfully the last few years I've gotten away with using regular makeup like mascara, eyeliner, etc.

I think makeup is great. But, for a haunted house, a great spooky mask is perfect. Also, you can pull a mask off from time to time to get fresh air. Makeup will itch and smear after awhile.

I prefer masks because Make-Up takes too long and never works out for me, also I purchase a new mask every year.
