My favs are:
Halloween the original
Friday The 13th original
The Howling
Race With The Devil (very exciting)
The Shining
Jeepers Creepers
Also I like:
Fright Night
Salem's Lot ( the complete miniseries)
Dark Secret Of Harvest Home
Crowhaven Farm
Dark Night Of The Scarecrow
Wrong Turn
I do have to include the original Exorcist since it was the only horror film that actually scared me!
But I agree, no hillbillies or teenieboppers at a party

I would say Candyman but that is the one movie I can't watch. Saw it once years ago and for some reason I can't bring myself to watch it again.

We recently acquired The Black Death with Sean Bean (LOTR, Troy, National Treasure) and thought it was pretty good, though somewhat disturbing. Also we enjoyed Season of the Witch (Nicholas Cage), which we found scary even though the one review I saw of it was not positive. Both movies are set in the Middle Ages, around the time of the outbreak of the bubonic plague. Witches are blamed for the disease.
I think The Descent is potentially terrifying, but I have trouble myself with movies that include the death of children.
My favorite scary movie is The Exorcism of Emily Rose, but you said you didn't want an exorcism movie.
It's not new, but From Hell with Johnny Depp blends horror with romance. That's a combination I always enjoy.

I haven't viewed it yet, but my son (just out of college) recently saw the American version of Let the Right One In and said it was very scary, & really good.

Thank you so much for the suggestions, I totally forgot about the 'Paranormal Activity' ones. A lot of the others ones don't scare me, I just like them too much.

Faceless, I was going to put 'Trick or Treat," but there are two different versions of it, and I couldn't remember which one I screened so I didn't post it. But you are quite right. "Trick or Treat" (the version I screened) was one of the best Halloween movies I ever saw.

I agree with Witchy..... "Insidious" was very good and scary. My wife jumped several times and I got the elbow twice in the face.

My high school son & his friend were talking about Insidious just a couple of days ago. They both thought it was scary. What is it about?
